The Necessity of the Holy Spirit | Pastor Chuck Salvo | 2.11.24 | Sunday AM | On Fire Christian Church
The necessity of the Holy Spirit
“He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” Acts 19:2 NKJV
These men were believers in Jesus based from this scripture
They had only been baptized into John and not into the Holy Ghost
The modern day church has shied away from the person of the Holy Spirit
There are manifestations of the Spirit that can be controversial and cannot be explained to a natural mind so therefore many back down trying to figure out God
Manifestations most likely are not discussed in scripture and to what they may be so that people do not try to mimic or put emphasis on them and then they become the attention rather than the actual work of the spirit.
Peter defended manifestations.
“For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.”. Acts 2:15 NKJV
These men were encouraged not to stop at repentance but to be passionate about another baptism. A baptism into the Spirit
“he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”Acts 19:2-6 NKJV
Paul was asking “are you partakers of the Holy Spirit by the evidence of illumination, conviction, sanctification and comfort”
This is His work!
We simply surrender to the Spirit
Many are in the church and are trying to live for God without the power of the Spirit to bring it about
”And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”Acts 10:45-47
it concerns us all, who profess the Christian faith, seriously to inquire whether we have received these. The Holy Ghost is promised to all believers, who sincerely, earnestly, and ask His influences
We should therefore strictly examine ourselves on this subject; and inquire whether we have received the Holy Ghost since we believed? The tree is known by its fruits. Do we bring forth the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, &c., all goodness, righteousness, and truth. Are we led by the Spirit? Do we live and walk in the Spirit? Do we experience his renovating power, and are we under his government?
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”Galatians 5:22-26 NKJV
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,”. Romans 8:13-16 NKJV
“But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,”Titus 3:4-6 NKJV
Holy Spirit of promise
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”Luke 11:13 NKJV
